June 17 – Sunday Afternoon Lecture, 2 pm, From the Magic City to the Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney at the Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939-1940. The speaker describes her talk, which includes a visual presentation:
“Walt Disney and Disney Studios are well known for their contributions to the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair: “Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln,” “It’s a Small World,” and other canonical attractions now at Disney parks worldwide. They made their debuts in New York in 1964 and brought the word “audioanimatronics” into use. But did you know that Walt and the studio’s first contribution to a world’s fair happened in San Francisco, on Treasure Island? And when Walt visited the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island in 1939, experiences and exhibits there affected him profoundly and ultimately influenced the development of Disneyland.”
