Mar 29, 1940 – Feb 14, 2025

Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's

Al Clavelli, the beloved patriarch of the West Coast Clavelli Clan, passed away at home on Valentine’s Day, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Chicago to Alfred M. Clavelli, Sr. and Helen Clemens, but moved to California as a young lad.  Al graduated from Palo Alto High School and then San Jose State University with a degree in accounting and finance.  He had a successful career with the US Government, beginning in San Francisco with Army Audit to HEW and to Regional Manager of the Department of Transportation in four states, ultimately retiring from the US State Department in Singapore.

After his retirement, he worked part-time for the California Society of CPAs and operated his own consulting business with clients in the Ukraine, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa and many other countries.  A combination of business and pleasure took him and Roseann to many foreign locations – including a year in Russia and many years in Singapore which provided travel opportunities throughout most of Asia.  Al and Roseann also traveled extensively in Europe and made frequent trips to their cottage in Co. Donegal, Ireland over 25 years, becoming “local” in the process.

Al was a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor, active in numerous professional organizations.  He served as president of the Association of Government Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the local chapter of California Society of CPAs.  He led the Western Association of Internal Auditors – a group founded earlier by his father, also a CPA.  Al frequently wrote articles for professional societies’ publications and was a guest lecturer at UC’s Graduate Extension Division and at Cadmus Education Foundation.

In his spare time, he was passionate about boating and took every opportunity to transport friends and family across the bay, often stopping at one of his favorite places, Angel Island.  He also enjoyed his sports cars and scuba diving.  He loved snow- and water-skiing and had the patience to teach these sports to all of the children plus other willing individuals.  Al was a member of the Tanglin Club in Singapore and the United Irish Cultural Center and its CCE group where he enjoyed Irish set dancing and made many new friends.  Al also had a soft spot for Yosemite where he created many amazing memories at his family’s cabin in the park.

Al was smart, kind, loving, fun and quite the prankster!  Most of all, Al was a family man – something he considered his most important accomplishment.  He is survived by his wife Roseann, children Elizabeth (Mike Dabkowski), Mark (Charlene), Alison (Greg Dykema) and stepson Richard Viczorek (Sarah).  He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one on-the-way, siblings Rita Tingley and Robert Clavelli, nephew Jeffrey Tingley (Valerie) and Clavelli cousins in central and southern California.  He was predeceased by his parents and stepson Rob Viczorek.

Services were held on March 7, 2025.
