Andre Andrews Sr. was born on January 1, 1959, in San Francisco, California, to the late Lance Andrews Jr. and the late Mrs. Tee Esther Andrews. The youngest of five children, Andre brought joy and spirit to his family from the very beginning.
He received his education at Mission High School, graduating with the Class of 1977. Andre accepted Christ at a young age and often attended Saturday Bible studies with his godfather, Beck (Roscoe), throughout his teenage and early adult years.
In the early 1990s, he joined New Liberation Presbyterian Church, where he became an active and devoted member. He served faithfully as a Deacon, Elder, and Usher until health challenges made regular attendance difficult.
Andre had a lifelong love for sports—especially basketball, where he truly shined. He was well known throughout San Francisco for his talent on the court. He also enjoyed classic Mafia films and documentaries, Clint Eastwood westerns, Humphrey Bogart films, and iconic Black cinema like Shaft and Super Fly. You could often find him watching favorite TV shows like the 1960s Batman series or Sanford and Son, laughing along with their timeless humor. His love for music was just as strong—funk bands, R&B, and jazz regularly filled the air from his car or truck, creating a soundtrack to his life.
On October 4, 1980, Andre married the love of his life, Sherrye Canson, in San Francisco. Together, they built a family full of love and laughter, raising five children. Andre dedicated over 25 years of service to San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), where he worked as a Transit Operator, Transit Supervisor, and Union Delegate. He retired from Muni in 2015.
Andre Andrews Sr. departed this life on Monday, July 28, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lance and Tee Esther Andrews; his sister, Terri Andrews; and his brothers, Gary and Ronnie Andrews.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Sherrye Andrews; two sons, Andre Andrews Jr. (Lupe Gonzalez) and Cory Andrews; three daughters, Adrienne Russi (Brian Russi), Ayanna Andrews (Hiram Hairston Sr.), and Savanna Andrews (Andy Nguyen); seven beloved grandchildren, Ta’Ziya, AnaBella, Jesus, Enzo, Ameerah, Hiram Jr., and Koemi; his loving sister, Gail (Renee) Roy; sisters-in-law, Karen Canson and Sarah Andrews; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends.
Andre will be remembered for his generous heart, his deep love for family, his unmistakable laugh, and his enduring faith. His spirit, warmth, and legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.
