Obituary
Beulah Mae Sunday (Shearer) was born on February 11, 1943 in Red River Parish (Gahagan, Louisiana) to James Sunday and Mineola (Ms. Dennis) Johnson. She attended Hannah Elementary in Red River Parish (Hannah, LA). She later transferred to Springville High School, also in Red River Parish (Coushatta, LA). She was a proud high school graduate, class of 1961. Beulah was athletic. Throughout school she played basketball and in high school was the drum majorette in the marching band. She went down in history as the very first fire baton twirling drum majorette. She stepped high and mighty for the marching band with her fire twirling techniques. In the off season when she was not participating in marching band activities or busy playing basketball she was working a part-time job, smiling the entire time with her “million-dollar smile.”
She was a hardworking woman all her life. At around 12-years-old she had her first job. She worked alongside her mother farming and sharecropping the land in Louisiana when she was not attending school.
In 1965 Beulah relocated to San Francisco and was a very proud resident for nearly 60 years. In 1968 she welcomed her beloved son Gregory Tyrone Sunday. On March 19, 1996 she married the love of her life, Douglas Shearer. She worked for Children’s Hospital of San Francisco/Sutter Health in domestic services for 45 years. She always displayed a beautiful attitude and gorgeous smile until her retirement. As a result, she received several awards for her dedicated service.
Beulah loved serving the Lord and was a member of Mt. Enon Baptist Church in San Franciso, CA., where she was an active member for more than 40 years. She participated on the usher board and sang in the choir for over 20 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Douglas Shearer; four brothers Clarence Johnson, H.C. Jackson, Sinclair Johnson, and Otis Johnson; two sisters, Helen George Coleman, and Sadie Mae Jackson.
Those left to cherish her memories include her devoted son Gregory Tyrone Sunday and his wife Kelly Hubbard-Sunday; sister and best friend, Bessie Terry Ross (Shreveport, LA), granddaughter Blake Kennedy and grandson Gregory Tyrone Sunday, Jr. She also left behind a host of precious nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, and other dedicated family members. A great number of friends, church members, the senior center community, ex colleagues, along with kind and loyal neighbors will also miss her.
