Gail Ann Castro

Apr 28, 1940 – Sep 10, 2024

Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's

Gail Ann (Lewis) Castro was born to Charles and Virginia Lewis in Alhambra, CA and briefly spent time in Panama, Baltimore and Omaha before settling in San Mateo.  She attended St. Matthew’s School in San Mateo and graduated from Notre Dame High School in Belmont in 1958, before studying at Stanford University and the College of Notre Dame. She married in 1962 and lived in various locations in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as San Antonio before settling in Foster City, CA, in 1973.

Her three children, Greg, Gary and Kathy, were born in consecutive years while she lived in Concord, CA in the 1960’s and they all currently reside in Northern California.  She often bragged about her four grandchildren, Christopher, Colleen, Kurt and Mark, and cherished the time she spent with them.  She cheerfully hosted holiday gatherings at her home and also loved a good fiesta.  She firmly believed the margarita is a breakfast food.

She worked various jobs over the years in the family business as well as at St. Luke Catholic Church.  She was always involved in schools, the Church and the Foster City community.  She loved to travel and cruise ships were her favorite mode of transport.  Her sister, Pat, was her go-to travelling companion, although she would take a trip with almost anyone – her kids, her partner Don, her Mom, her other siblings, or her friends.

She passed away peacefully at her home in Foster City, CA, having lived a long and complete life, with nothing left on her bucket list. She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother and sister, Steve and Pat.  She is survived by her longtime partner, Don Adam, as well as her older brother, Roger (and his wife Diana), her children and grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Carol, six nieces and nephews, and numerous other family and friends who loved her through the years.

All are invited to her funeral mass on Tuesday, October 22, at 11 am at St. Luke Catholic Church in Foster City.  Remembrances can be made to Life Moves, a favorite charity of hers that helps people get back on their feet when times have gotten them down.

Memories

  • Remembering Gail at the Manors HOA in Redwood Shores

I am saddened to learn of Gail’s passing, and am writing to share remembrances from our time together at the Manors HOA on Mendocino Way in Redwood Shores. Gail was an always-positive presence in our community — someone who pitched in naturally, whether it was helping with gardening and beautification or simply showing up with a smile and steady good sense. She was whip-smart, kind, patient, and generous with her wisdom. I valued her deeply as a friend, both in navigating HOA matters and in matters of real life. Gail had a calm, friendly way of being that put people at ease, a warmth that stayed with you long after a conversation. I feel it still. Gail spoke often and proudly of her children and grandchildren, and always with love and respect for her sister Pat in Seattle. Her presence — her smile, her thoughtfulness, her quiet strength — will always live inside me. Gail made everyone around her better simply by being there.
