Herbert Yoshiyuki Toda, 89, of San Mateo, Ca passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2023. Herbert was born on September 01, 1934 to Yoshinobu and Chidori (Fujii) Toda in Lihue, Hawaii.  With WWII, the family remained in Kauai, but was limited to only work and school activities with the remaining time being under home confinement.  During high school, Herbert was an active amateur radio operator and connected around the globe and was commissioned as a junior police officer.  In 1952, he graduated Lihue High School and continued to work to support the family.  Herbert entered the US Army in 1955 and completed basic training at Fort Ord, Monterey, Ca.  After completing Signal School, he was assigned to the 10th Infantry Division where he served most notably in Germany setting up and repairing radio communications.  He served in the Army for six years.

After being honorably discharged from the service, Herbert relocated in San Francisco, Ca and Ethel moved from Stockton, Ca to Los Angeles then to San Francisco.  Herbert and Ethel met through mutual friends (Miyashiro, Suzuki, Wong, Halualani,  Miyamoto, Ueda’s) and were married in 1964. They moved to San Mateo, Ca shortly afterwards.

Herbert completed both technical and junior college programs in electronics.  He began his career in electronics at Ampex Corporation for the remainder of his career retiring in 1999.  After retirement, he enjoyed playing tennis, going to Las Vegas, traveling with Ethel, working on electronic projects, and playing the  ukulele.  Herbert is survived by sons, Timothy (Karen) and Kenneth, grandchildren, Aidan and Emmalyn, and sisters Lilian Haina and Lois Katsuki. Herbert will be remembered for his love and immense pride in his children and particularly his grandchildren.

Ethel Akemi Toda, 85, of San Mateo, CA passed away on January 10, 2021 at Kaiser Hospital Redwood City. She was born on May 25, 1935 to Harry and Kimiyo (Shingu) Futamachi in Stockton, CA. Her childhood was interrupted by WWII. Ethel with her family was sent to Stockton Assembly center for 7 months. After that time, they were sent to an Internment camp in Rowher, Arkansas for 3 years. They settled in Scott, Arkansas for 5 years. The family did farming in Arkansas until the death of their father. In 1951, they returned to Stockton. While in Stockton, she graduated from Stockton College. She worked as a word processor at KPMG Peat Marwick, Leigh Fisher Associate Airport Consultant for 50 Years. She was a Fujinkai Board member at San Mateo Buddhist Temple. Unfortunately, she passed on the day she was to receive her service award .  She enjoyed gardening, floral arranging, reading, cooking and traveling to the National Parks and abroad. She loved all her pet cats.

She was survived by her loving husband of 57 years Herbert, son Timothy and daughter-in-law Karen, grandchildren Aidan and Emmalyn , son Kenneth and sister Rose Sasaki.  She was preceded in death by brother Jiro Futamachi. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by many.
