Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's

James “Jamie” Nugent Casey, 74, of San Mateo, CA passed away on October 11, 2023 with his wife and soulmate Joan (Clements) Casey, his son Kevin Casey and his daughter Julie (Casey) Hong by his side. The third oldest of five children to the late Thomas and Barbara (Dyer) Casey, Jamie was born on October 16, 1948. He will be remembered fondly for his kindness, stories, humor, love of travel and cookies.

Jamie was born and raised in San Mateo, CA with his four siblings. He attended St. Matthew Catholic Elementary School in San Mateo, CA and Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, CA. He then attended the University of San Francisco for both his bachelor and law degrees. He was an attorney for 50 years practicing estate planning.

Jamie met Joan, the love of his life, in February 1978 when his Uncle Ernie and Aunt Peggy introduced them. Jamie knew it was love at first sight because they were soon engaged and officially married in November 1978. They got married at Notre Dame Des Victoires Church in San Francisco, CA. Jamie and Joan traveled world together as they visited all 7 continents and over 100 countries.

Jamie and Joan raised two kids, Kevin and Julie. Jamie spent a lot of time ushering his kids to many sports activities and Irish dancing competitions. Jamie coached the basketball teams for his alma mater St. Matthew’s and then coached Kevin while at St. Gregory’s School in San Mateo, CA. He valued being available for his friends and family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend .

Jamie was an expert storyteller with an amazing sense of humor. Whenever the opportunity arose, he would jump at the chance to tell a story (and there were a lot of stories!). He cared deeply about service. He volunteered for many different organizations such as the Serra Club, St. Vincent de Paul, St. John’s Cemetery, and Rotary Club, among others.

Lastly, Jamie was an avid cookie baker. Each year he hosted a cookie party where he would bake many different varieties of cookies that he spent months researching and perfecting. One of his favorite cookies was named after his grandchildren called the Lydia, Logan, Elodie and Maddie mixed up cookie with a caramel M&M in a chocolate chip cookie. Some folks even referred to him as the “Cookie King.”

Jamie is survived by his wife, Joan Casey, his two children and their spouses: Kevin Casey and daughter-in-law Katie of Glenview, IL, Julie (Casey) Hong and son-in-law Stan Hong of San Carlos, CA. He also leaves behind his five grandchildren, Lydia Casey, Logan Casey, Elodie Casey, Madison Hong, Baby Boy Hong (coming in January 2024). Jamie also leaves behind his siblings, Thomas Casey III and sister-in-law Betty Casey, Richard Casey and sister-in-law Shelly Casey, Carol (Casey) Gelatt, Joseph Casey and sister-in-law Gigi Casey, as well as many other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on October 19th at 10am at St. Gregory’s Church – 2715 Hacienda St, San Mateo, CA 94403 with a reception afterwards to celebrate Jamie’s life.

Flowers can be sent to Sneider & Sullivan & O’Connell’s Funeral Home and Cremation Service at 977 S El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA 94402.
