In Loving Memory of Kaaren Suzanne Smith
1942 – 2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Kaaren Suzanne Smith on July 19, 2025. Born and raised in Belmont, California, Kaaren was a proud graduate of Notre Dame High School Belmont, Class of 1960. She is survived by her devoted partner of 25 years, Bob Soldera; her beloved children, Gregory Tuck and Jennifer Doherty (John); her cherished grandchildren, Jordan and Laine O’Connor (Patrick) and her sister Marsha Steeb (John).  Kaaren passed due to head trauma sustained in a fall. She was 83 years young.

Kaaren was a spirited, determined woman—truly a fighter throughout her life. She defied the odds time and again, overcoming illness after illness with strength and grace. After a courageous battle with leukemia, aspergillosis and many other ailments, she was declared a “medical miracle” by one of her doctors—a title she wore with pride and humor. Her resilience inspired all who knew her.

A nature lover at heart, Kaaren found joy in the outdoors and had a deep affection for animals. Her home was a sanctuary to many, from rescued creatures to hummingbirds that flocked to her numerous feeders. She raised chickens—one of which, Frankie, lived to the impressive age of 15—and shared a special bond with her beloved horses, Mac and Bindi, who were truly part of the family.

Kaaren had a natural gift with children. Her grandchildren brought her immense happiness, and later in life, she welcomed a young boy into her world, becoming a mentor, friend, and teacher. She shared her love of animals, nature, and swimming with him, creating treasured memories for them both.

Rooted in her Italian heritage, Kaaren was also a talented cook and baker. Her lasagna, meatballs, and signature apple pie were off the charts. She expressed love through food and hospitality, always making those around her feel cared for.

One of Kaaren’s proudest accomplishments was raising her two children as a single mother. She was deeply involved in their lives, volunteering at their schools and ensuring they always felt supported and loved. In her 50s, she fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning her Bachelor’s Degree from Notre Dame de Namur University, proving once again her fierce determination.

For the past 25 years, Kaaren shared a beautiful life with Bob, her partner and soulmate. They met at a horse ranch and bonded over their shared love of animals and the outdoors. Together, they built a life full of adventure, dancing, camping, gardening, and love. Throughout her health battles Bob was her steadfast caregiver and greatest support, ensuring she continued to visit her horses daily and feel the joy they brought her. We cannot thank him enough for his love and devotion.

A Celebration of Life honoring Kaaren will be held on Sunday, September 7th at 12:30 PM. Please join us in her daughter’s garden at 2110 White Oak Way, San Carlos. Lunch will be served.

In true Kaaren fashion, we invite you to dress in bright colors or Western wear—no need for traditional funeral attire. She loved vibrancy, personality, and joy, and we want this day to reflect the spirited life she lived.

Please join us as we gather to share memories, laughter, and love in celebration of an extraordinary woman who lived with courage, compassion, and heart.
