Marcelino Duya Miranda, age 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, December 28, 2025, five days short of what would have been his 89th birthday, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in South San Francisco, California. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Marcelino was born on January 2, 1937, in Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines, to Lucerio and Severina Miranda. He was the youngest of ten children. He graduated from Araneta University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education and Sciences. He dedicated the early part of his career to public service, working with various Philippine government agencies, including the Philippine Sugar Institute, the Abaca Development Agency, and Agricultural Extension, where he served as a farm consultant.
In 1961, Marcelino met the love of his life, Edna Baes, while working at the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM). After a seven-year courtship, they were married in February 1967. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and perseverance. They welcomed their first son, Alexis, in December 1967, followed by their second son, Darius, in February 1970. Marcelino and Edna immigrated to the United States in 1971 to start a new life, and in 1973, Edna traveled back to the Philippines to pick up the boys and join them in San Francisco. In August 1974, they welcomed their daughter, Gladys.
Marcelino was a hardworking and dedicated employee. He began his career in the U.S. as an Assistant Dietician Clerk at French Hospital, which was later acquired by Kaiser Permanente, where he worked until his retirement in 1996. During those years, he also held additional jobs delivering food for a popular Chinese restaurant and working as a cook at The Tennessee Grill, where he was able practice his culinary skills. After retiring from Kaiser, he continued to work as a security guard at the Philippine Consulate and later with Allied Security as a concierge at Buena Vista Park Hill residences, where he worked until the age of 82. There, he formed meaningful, lifelong friendships with the residents of Park Hill, who came to know and love him dearly.
Marcelino was a kind, generous man with a big heart. He was often described as being like Santa Claus always giving to others, whether or not it was Christmas. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends; exercising by walking to the market for fresh produce and to the bank; listening to music and singing; reading the newspaper; and doing crossword puzzles. His warmth, humility, and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Edna; his three children, Alexis, Darius, and Gladys; his daughter-in-law, Sharon, and son-in-law, Greg; and his four grandchildren, Marcus, Brittany, Kyle, and Jacob.
Marcelino was the youngest of ten and the final one to leave us. In addition to his immediate family, he is also survived by many nieces and nephews, both here in the United States and in the Philippines, and together we all carry on the Miranda legacy.
We will all miss him dearly and find comfort in knowing that Marcelino lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love and laughter he shared, and the memories that will be cherished forever.
