Gordon Hughan’s life reflects a journey of love, service, and a commitment to education. Born on December 3, 1933, in Oakland, California, to parents Harry and Ethel (MacPhail) Hughan, Gordon’s pride in his Scottish heritage became a significant aspect of his identity.

Gordon’s life took a notable turn when he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he pursued a path dedicated to education, graduating from Cal State Hayward (East Bay). His passion for teaching led him to the Newport Beach School District, where he shared his knowledge and impacted students’ lives.

Furthering his education, Gordon earned a Master’s Degree from Syracuse Universitys Newhouse School of Communication. This marked the beginning of a career that saw him as the Instructional Television Coordinator at the Milwaukee PBS Station. His journey continued with the Agency for Instructional Technology and the Indiana University connection, where he served as the Western Regional Manager for AIT and later produced educational media in Bloomington, Indiana.

Returning to California, Gordon took on the role of Training Director for Burke Concrete, showcasing his adaptability and diverse skill set in instructional design for the sales force. As a longtime resident of Millbrae, California, Gordon contributed to his community as the Noise-Abatement Manager for the San Francisco International Airport and Millbrae. His commitment to public service and local government showcased his dedication to the well-being of his city.

Beyond his professional life, Gordon embraced various hobbies, including half-marathon running, race walking, sailing, and golfing. His summers at Pine Mountain Lake were filled with joy, witnessing the growth of his grandchildren and instilling in them the family motto: “Do the right thing.” This philosophy reflects Gordon’s commitment to a life of integrity, always striving to make the right choices.

Gordon’s enduring love story with his wife, Caryl Mensch Hughan, lasted 63 years. He is survived by Caryl and their sons, Andrew (Katherine) Hughan and Timothy (Dawn) Hughan, along with grandchildren Presten, Alexander, and Madeleine.

Special thanks and gratitude to those who provided exceptional care to Gordon, particularly Dr. J. Claude Hemphill III, MD, and the Chan Zuckerberg SF General Hospital Trauma Center staff.
