Robert Than Lwin Wong

Life Story of Robert Than Lwin Wong a Robert Than win Wong was born on September 25, 1934 to Wong Au Nam and Lim Ah Nwe in Rangoon, Burma. Robert received his formal education and Bachelors of Science Degree at Yangon University. He worked as a district manager in the northern Burma township of Tawnte shortly after graduating from Yangon University.

He spoke fondly of his time in Tawnte, meeting many good friends during his tenure there. After returning to Rangoon from Tawnte, he worked as a chief warden at the jail in Rangoon. He met the love of his life, Iris Chan, and married her in 1972. They wasted no time starting a family, eventually having three daughters (Monica, Debra, and Lily) while in Rangoon.

Together they pursued a new life in America, immigrating to San Francisco shortly after their youngest daughter Lily was born. Seven years later, they had a son, Terrence, and their family was complete. Robert took up the profession of Instrument Technician, working tirelessly in this trade to provide for his family for over 30 years before retiring in 2013. He enjoyed throwing big parties for family and friends, perfecting his poultry cooking skills over the years during annual Thanksgiving gatherings. He had a witty and honest sense of humor, often telling jokes and stories with his unforgettable hearty laugh. He was never one to turn away from family and friends in need, often looking out for the welfare of his loved ones through acts of generosity…one of his cherished mottos was “charity begins at home.” 

Robert is survived by his wife: Iris Wong; his children: Monica Ha, Debra Wong, Lily Hayes Wong, and Terrence Wong; Son-in-law: Van Ha; Daughters-in-law: Janet Wong and Tamika Hayes-Wong; and Granddaughters: Zoe Wong, Ava Wong, and Sage Hayes Wong.
