Suzanne ‘Sue’ Butler, 91, of San Mateo, California, passed away on December 11, 2023. She was born on May 15, 1932 in Berkeley, California.

Sue was a courageous and independent woman who enjoyed outdoor adventures and had a deep love for animals. Sue and her husband, James (Jim), shared a passion for backpacking, exploring the Sierra and Southern Rocky Mountains. She dedicated her time as a volunteer wildlife rehabber and Oiled Wildlife Care Network volunteer. Sue cherished her daily horse rides in Woodside and annual trips to a dude ranch in Wyoming.

In her professional life, Sue served as one of the first women operations supervisors for Pacific Bell and AT&T.

Sue is survived by her nieces Heidi Dettmering, Gretchen “Lea” Cooke, Kristin Gaugler, and nephew Kurt Gaugler. She was preceded in death by James Kent Butler (4/30/31—8/28/2006). Services have been held. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Peninsula Humane Society or Planned Parenthood (PPNC).
