Velois W. Steele, affectionately known as “Velois,” passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on October 26, 2024, at La Casa Verde Care Home in Walnut Creek, California, due to infirmities of age. Born on August 11, 1941, in Canton, Mississippi, Velois was a beloved resident of San Francisco for over 60 years, sharing much of her life with her two daughters. She will be remembered for her warm heart, unwavering faith, and deep devotion to family.

Velois was the cherished daughter of Willie and Alva Anderson, who preceded her in death, along with her grandmother, Rosetta Bright. She grew up in a close-knit family, sharing her life with siblings Renne Anderson, Larryett Anderson, Schynell Strong, Undreyea Anderson, Avilone Renee Anderson-Franklin, Renella Anderson, Caron Michelle Anderson Thurman, Keith Anderson, and Marcus Undreyea Anderson.

After attending San Francisco City College, Velois dedicated her career to the San Francisco Unified School District, where her kindness, compassion, and commitment to education left a lasting impact on her colleagues and students alike.

A woman of deep faith and joy, Velois found comfort in singing at church, attending Bible studies, and cherishing time with her family. She loved taking mini-vacations and creating memories with her loved ones that they will forever treasure.

She is survived by her beloved children, Kimberly Gamboa and Karen Steele; her grandchildren, Myalisha Dessman and Demoney Steele; and her great-granddaughter, Danielle Maxine Dessman. Velois is also survived by her brothers, Charles Anderson and Richard Andersen, as well as a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews, including Ella Kenaricky, Antonio Kendrick, Edward Kendrick, Tasha, Dominique, Antonio, and many others.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Velois’s life and remember her as a loving, joyful presence who brought light and warmth to all who knew her.
