Back to School: Learning Never Stops at Cypress Lawn

In the words of Albert Einstein, “The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing.” We agree with the famed physicist, and our staff here at Cypress Lawn tries to make that sentiment a reality by offering lectures, docent-led tours, and other educational events encouraging Bay Area families to keep learning! This month, as your kids or grandkids gear up for a new school year, you might find that you have more time to invest in your own learning. This might include picking up some extra books at the library, singing up for a class at a local community college, or exploring all that Cypress Lawn has to offer.

Cypress Lawn truly is a living museum, and our staff takes great pride in not only meeting family’s funeral and cremation needs during difficult times in life, but also presenting unique opportunities to learn and grow. Our passion for educational and cultural events is so strong we founded the Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation. This non-profit organization promotes the preservation and restoration of the incomparable art, architecture, and arboretum at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park. We greatly value our Bay Area community and hope that is reflected through the diverse educational programs we provide to them all year long.

After all, if Einstein never stopped questioning, neither should we! Some of our upcoming events include:

August 11 at 1:30 p.m.: Annual Victorian Days Heritage Tour

Our fun and engaging walking tours, offered once a month between April and October, explore different aspect of Cypress Lawn history, art, and architecture. These docent-led excursions will stretch your legs and your mind.

August 19 at 2:00 p.m.: Sunday Afternoon Lecture

This is our 18th year providing free lectures to our community. We liken these events to college lectures – but without the hefty tuition! This month, our topic is Discovering Titanic – Examining the 106-Year Legend and Titanic’s Cypress Lawn Connections. Our featured guest is author and professor Sheryl Rinkol. If you would like to be on our mailing list for monthly reminders of these lectures and tours, please call 650-550-8812 or email Terry Hamburg.

Historical Trolley Tours of Our Grounds

For the convenience and enjoyment of our neighbors and visitors who want to experience Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, we offer Historical Trolley Tours of our grounds. The trolley allows us to whisk around all three campuses to cover grounds and see sites that couldn’t be visited in a single walking tour. For more information on scheduling a Historical Trolley Tour of Cypress Lawn, contact Heritage Foundation Director, Terry Hamburg, at thamburg@cypresslawn.com or 650-550-8812.

Cypress Lawn Book Club

We meet on the third Thursday of every month at 11:00 a.m. to talk about a wide-ranging selection of books with a general emphasis on Bay Area history and cemetery/funeral topics. No reservations are required, and you can attend even if you haven’t read the designated book. Conversation is sure to be lively!

Whether you choose to participate in one of our organized educational events, or you prefer to simply stroll through our carefully maintained gardens and view our stunning memorial statues and monuments, we say, “Welcome!” We hope you will come to treasure Cypress Lawn as much as we do.
