How GivingTuesday Can Help Our Heritage Museum

GivingTuesday is a worldwide movement that takes place each year and promotes radical generosity and giving to those in need. This year, on November 28, people across the country make special efforts to give of what they have to others. At Cypress Lawn, our dedicated staff members participate in this important annual event throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area. GivingTuesday can help our Heritage Museum and its important work promoting the legacy of Cypress Lawn.

About the Heritage Museum

The Cypress Lawn Heritage Museum is a testament to California’s history and the history of the Western United States. The museum was founded in 1892 under the direction of Hamden Holmes Noble at a time when very few cemeteries existed in San Francisco. Noble noticed a need for change, and inspired by East Coast cemeteries, he built the 150-acre grounds that is the modern-day Cypress Lawn. Later, the Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation was created to ensure proper upkeep of this important Bay Area landmark.

Supporting the Heritage Foundation

When you give to the Heritage Foundation, you support educational programming for guests of all ages at Cypress Lawn, along with the maintenance and expansion of our Arboretum. The Arboretum at Cypress Lawn boasts various types of horticultural specimens, including over 100 species and nearly 3,000 individual trees. These living wonders are a testament to the natural beauty of the Bay Area, and our team at Cypress Lawn works hard to preserve their position in the landscape.

Art and Architecture in Our Memorial Park

Many pieces of art call our Memorial Park home, but climate factors and air pollution leave these fragile monuments and memorials at risk of decay. Funds donated to the Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation go toward the preservation and restoration of these historic artworks. The oldest works in the Memorial Park are the most vulnerable to decay and receive the least support from endowments. Preserving the visual history of Cypress Lawn and the greater American cemetery movement is something everyone on our staff considers to be critical for the betterment of our community.
